2006 - 2007 Projects: Miramichi River Environmental Assessment Committee

Greater Ecosystem Initiatives
Achievement in a collaborative effort is the basis for each of the eight initiatives MREAC is supporting under this title. Each of these initiatives includes like-minded partners who are realizing the opportunity to advance their organizational interests through cooperation and working within the particular board or committee to advance its interest.

Public Awareness and Information
Miramichi residents and regional communities need information and awareness to take ownership of issues to allow for effective resolutions. MREAC's Public Awareness/Information program is designed to motivate this process and provides a public awareness/ information component on all of their projects.

Water Quality and Watershed Management
Water quality monitoring and remediation programs on the Miramichi must continue to address historic, current, and recurring water quality issues. The scope of this project includes the entire watershed but the components of this project are commonly much more focused as will be noted. This project involves the following activities: Striped bass, Little Southwest Miramichi Oxbox, Wetland Stewardship, Swim Watch, Sub-Watershed Monitoring, Community Aquatic Monitoring Program (CAMP), Sanitary Shellfish Project, River Watch/ Air Watch, and Waste Stream Management.

Miramichi State of Environment Report
As the second largest river system in New Brunswick, and representing over 20% of the province's land base, the Miramichi is in need of an updated SOE Report. MREAC was host and contributor to the Miramichi Environmental Science Workshop in 1994 that produced the most current document that reflects a comprehensive statement on the Miramichi environment. Dramatic changes since that time in the several major activity sectors that impact the watershed require an update on this assessment. MREAC proposes to undertake this assignment in 2006/07.
