On Nov. 12, 2008 the Atlantic Salmon Federation will be honoring Paul Volcker at its New York Dinner. Paul Volcker is known as a giant in the world of economics. However he also has a passion for conservation, the environment and for Atlantic salmon. Check out details:
http://asf.ca/news.php?id=299

For an up-to-date article on Paul Volcker's most recent activities, go to:
http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB122454498635252109-lMyQjAxMDI4MjI0MTUyNDE0Wj.html

Paul Volcker's Atlantic salmon interest is also mentioned on his Wikipedia page, along with his background, including an extended period as Chairman of the Federal Reserve.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Volcker

In Maine, federal authorities have announced public hearings taking place next week in Augusta and Brewer on the potential expanded listing for endangered status to Atlantic salmon populations in the Penobscot, Kennebec and Androscoggin rivers.
http://asf.ca/news.php?id=294

For more background, the U. ASF's Dr. Fred Whoriskey is one of the report authors. Go to:
http://asf.ca/news.php?id=298

The Atlantic Salmon Federation has been a pioneer in tracking salmon with acoustic tags, and this is helping to unravel the mystery of at-sea migration and mortality. Now using this technology, researchers on Canada's West Coast have tracked chinook salmon down the Columbia River and out to sea, and results were released yesterday. One article that provides some background is:
http://www.genengnews.com/news/bnitem.aspx?name=44297168

The acoustic tag technology continues to progress quickly, and is helping to expand our knowledge of many species - from Atlantic salmon to sharks and sea turtles.

Bass Threaten Miramichi, Politics ignores salmon

News from the Atlantic Salmon Federation - Oct. 23/08

Who cares about Atlantic salmon? Today's Halifax Chronicle-Herald and other newspapers are carrying an Opinion Letter from the Atlantic Salmon Federation's President Bill Taylor. It asks why the Conservatives chose not to answer a set of questions on the future of wild Atlantic salmon.
http://asf.ca/news.php?id=292

There are links to the responses of other parties and individuals at the front page of ASF's site - http://asf.ca

In other developments affecting Atlantic salmon rivers, there are concerns raised about the discovery of smallmouth bass introduced into the Miramichi River system. Nearly a quarter of all salmon returning to North America spawn in the Miramichi's streams.
http://asf.ca/news.php?id=290

ASF's Dr. Fred Whoriskey is on the crisis team working to counter this threat to the Miramichi watershed, and many others are concerned and watching the issue closely, including the New Brunswick Salmon Council. Another article addressing it is:
http://miramichileader.canadaeast.com/news/article/455666

On the other side of the Atlantic there has been exciting news -for the first time in a half century, Atlantic salmon have been found in Switzerland. There has been a major restoration effort for the past two decades on the Rhine - and it shows that success can be achieved.
http://www.upi.com/Science_News/2008/10/15/Rare_wild_salmon_turns_up_in_Rhine/UPI-12241224106090/

Finally, a perspective suggesting we stop to take a breath of autumn air, and watch Atlantic salmon swimming upstream. It can be a moment of beauty, and insight into the environment and our place in it. The author suggests a visit to http://www.asf.ca for more information on Atlantic salmon.
http://asf.ca/news.php?id=293
